Germán Lázaro Rodríguez López

Died: April 26, 2011

Director of the Nueva Sonora Matancera de Colombia made up of Cuban and Colombian musicians with recognized careers. This group emerged as a tribute to the Sonora Matancera de Cuba.

He also directed the group Yaré and was the musical director of the Festival Nacional de Boleros de Colombia.

Lázaro was passionate about the trumpet, a great connoisseur of Cuban music and its protagonists. Speaking with him meant constantly recalling stories and anecdotes with the great singers of the Isla de Martí.

From a young age he took advantage of his excellent ear which led him to perfect the execution of the slide instrument. Since the time of the distant group Mozambique, where he began his musical career, he has been a trumpet player for orchestras as important as Las Estrellas de Chocolate, the Conjunto Colonial de Nelo Sosa, El Conjunto Tropicana, Raúl Planas, La Banda Gigante de Benny Moré and the Sonora de Laito, Estanislao Sureda Hernández.

The Nueva Sonora always gave music lovers and collectors who attended the Parque de la Música the best of the traditional matancero songbook.

He died in Cali after falling from a ladder when he was about to carry out arrangements to organize the Festival de Boleros
