Federico Augusto Incháustegui Cabrera

Died: September 7, 1895

Brigadier General and physician of the Cuban Liberation Army. He was a distinguished patriot who served as Chief of Military Health, and actively participated in the two wars against Spanish colonialism in Cuba.

He was born in La Habana, as recorded in his baptism certificate at the church of Espíritu Santo de La Habana, Book of Baptisms of Whites, volume 34, folio 182. His parents were Félix Incháustegui and Polonia Cabrera.

This distinguished patriot was granted the rank of Brigadier posthumously in recognition of the merits accumulated since his entry into the Liberation Army during the War of 1868, in which he achieved the rank of Colonel of Health.

Doctor Incháustegui, forgetting his physical ailments and at more than 50 years of age, joined from the early days of the new stage of the war that began on February 24, 1895. He served as Chief of Health of the Mambí Army and despite his ailments having worsened due to the hardships and harsh life of the manigua, he attended the combats from which he frequently had to be withdrawn. Such was the example this selfless fighter for the independence cause gave to posterity.

Regarding his death, there are various opinions among Cuban researchers, however the most reliable account is that it occurred in Dos Bocas de Tana, jurisdiction of Manzanillo, on September 7, 1895, and that he requested "that he be buried without ceremonies and that a Cuban company march in search of the enemy and fire upon the Spanish ranks the three volleys that should be fired over his tomb".
