Erislandy Álvarez Borges

La Amenaza

Erislandy Álvarez Borges (Cienfuegos, July 14, 2000) is a Cuban boxer who won the gold medal in the men's 63.5 kg division at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming Cuba's only boxing gold medalist at those Games.

Álvarez, known professionally as La Amenaza (The Threat), defeated French boxer Sofiane Oumiha by split decision in the Olympic final, in an intense and emotionally charged contest. He had secured his Olympic berth at the Boxing World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 31, 2024 — the same day his grandmother passed away, to whose memory he dedicated his eventual gold medal.

His boxing style is more power-oriented than the classical Cuban school, combining sharp defensive movement with heavier punching. After his Olympic triumph he turned professional with Cuba's Domadores team, going 6-0 before suffering a second-round knockout loss to Panamanian José "El Magnífico" Núñez in Santiago, Chile, in April 2026, losing the WBA continental title in the 63.5 kg division and suffering his first professional defeat.
