Kid Baturrito
Died: September 8, 1980
Boxing idol, in 1930. The renowned boxer, from a very young age had to work and forget childhood games to dedicate most of his time to earning his livelihood, and the streets of Holguín, which at that time were dirt roads and cobblestone paths, knew his footsteps as he worked as a messenger at the pharmacy of Doctor Oscar Albanés Carballo.
However, between one message and another, in his constant wandering, he always maintained the dream of being a boxer and tested his dreams which became increasingly intense and restless. He managed to introduce himself into that world of fists and gave life to his hope of placing himself among the best.
Enrique Santos debuted in the ring at just 16 years of age as an opponent of Evaristo Pupo. After engaging in his first two combat duels he demonstrates his progress and wins by technical knock out.
The victories of Kid Baturrito are continuous and he surpasses in combat pugilists such as Mario Sánchez, Anselmo Delgado, Jimmy Flynn, Luís Kid Aguiar, Yuong Souval, chocolatico Pinareño, Baby La Paz Carpenter, Lesmes and Carlos Betancourt, Ray Castellanos, Mudito de Casa Blanca and others.
He contests the national lightweight championship on December 17, 1932, against Joaquín Torregrosa and loses the decision. He never again had the opportunity for a national title.
Exhausted by the carefree life of cabarets and easy conquests, he was losing ground in boxing. Finally a devastating blow from Black Bill Holguinero in "Bolito's" tent put an end to the career of the idol between the years 34 and 35. Thus was the life of this pugilist, idolized by the public.
However, his memory remains in the hearts of many boxing fans who chose him among the greats and recognize the qualities of a pugilist who provided moments of intense emotion to his admirers and managed with his fists to mark a successful era of Holguín sports.
