He was educated in the United States and in La Habana. In 1907 he entered the Department of State of Cuba, where he became assistant to the secretary of state and member of the Civil Service Commission between 1910 and 1912.
He was a writer for Teatro Alegre, El Heraldo de Cuba, and El Fígaro. In 1918 he was part of the Cuban Consular Corps.
He was theater editor of La Nación. He directed the Annals of the National Academy of Arts and Letters. He collaborated in El Triunfo and in foreign publications.
He belonged to the National Academy of Arts and Letters, the Folkloric Society, the Circle of Journalists, the Ateneo de la Habana, the Cuban Club of Fine Arts, the Inter-American Ibero Committee, and various national and foreign institutions.
