Edilio Hernández

Born in La Habana. He began his musical studies at the Escuela de Superación Profesional «Ignacio Cervantes» and graduated with a degree in Music, specializing in singing from the Instituto Superior de Arte, in La Habana.

He studied under professors Ramón Chávez, Jorge L. Pacheco, Ramón Calzadilla and Adolfo Casas.

He perfected his vocal technique at the Centro de Artistas Líricos del Teatro alla Scala, Milán, Italia (1979-1981), where he was guided by Giulietta Simionato, Gina Cigna and Eduardo Müller.

He had begun his artistic career as a rising star of CMQ-TV in 1956.

He joined the choirs of the Teatro Lírico Nacional de Cuba in 1969. He performed in small roles in Madama Butterfly (Yamadori, 1971), Estampas de Cecilia Valdés (Slave, 1972) and in 1974 he played Iván in La leyenda del beso (1974), then performed in La del soto del parral (1974), La esclava (1978), Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton, 1979), Tosca (Cavaradossi, 1979), La traviata (Alfredo, 1980), Los payasos (Canio, 1982), La bohème (Rodolfo, 1985), Cavalleria rusticana (Turiddu, 1986).

He undertook two European tours, first in 1974 with Cecilia Valdés and then in 1979, singing La traviata, Madama Butterfly and Tosca in Germany; former Czechoslovakia and Poland.

He taught singing at the Instituto Superior de Arte, among other institutions.

In 1980 he was honored in Italia with the Trofeo Giuseppe Verdi, Parma and the Trofeo San Fedele, Milán.
