Edelmira Ignacia Adriana Sampredro Robato

Condesa de Covadonga, La Puchunga

Died: May 23, 1994

Condesa de Covadonga was born in Sagua la Grande and died in Coral Gables, Miami (Florida). Her father, Luciano Pablo Sampedro y Ocejo, a native of Matienzo, Cantabria, emigrated as a young man, around 1880, to Cuba, and became owner of a sugar cane plantation. Her mother, Edelmira Robato y Turro, was born in Cuba, of Asturian origin. She was a cousin of the professor and writer Jorge Mañach y Robato.

She met Alfonso de Borbón y Battenberg, son of Alfonso XIII, who at that time was Prince of Asturias, at the Leysin Sanatorium in Switzerland; Alfonso was receiving treatment as he suffered from hemophilia. Edelmira did not belong to any royal family, a requirement that had to be met in order not to lose the rights of succession to the throne. At her father's request, Prince Alfonso renounced his succession rights in writing in Lausanne on June 11, 1933 in order to marry Edelmira, and from then on he used the title of Count of Covadonga.

They were married in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Ouchy, near Lausanne, on June 21, 1933. Her husband described her as a "person endowed with all the qualities to make me happy". They had no children.

Alfonso and Edelmira ended up divorcing in Havana on May 8, 1937. She demanded a pension of 100 dollars a month and all the gifts she had received from him.

Subsequently, the infante married Marta Esther Rocafort y Altuzarra.

Many years after Alfonso's death, with the monarchy restored, his wife's remains were transferred to Spain in 1985. Edelmira attended this repatriation at Miami airport.

She was the only woman that the Royal Family recognized as the wife of the prince. After his death, relations with her in-laws improved (they nicknamed her "La Puchunga"), so she was granted a widow's pension and even given some jewels after the death of her former mother-in-law, Victoria Eugenia.

She never married again and never granted any interview. She died at the age of 88.
