Carlos Manuel Guzmán Hernández

Carlos Guzmán, graduate of the Academia de San Alejandro, is an accomplished artist within Cuban visual arts who expresses himself fundamentally in the field of painting, although he works in other genres. His work represents a dreamlike and imaginative world that distinguishes his poetics within the national scene.

Human elements blend with improbable mechanisms and machines, and the compositions are random and sui generis. In his latest pieces, he uses collage and mixed media as a procedure, incorporating pages from antique books and other materials into fabric. Carlos Guzmán is one of the artists who enjoys the privilege of having a studio in the Historic Center. He has exhibited on multiple occasions in the galleries of the Oficina del Historiador. One of the exhibitions in these spaces is Ciudad Saudade, together with Eduardo Abela and Tomás Núñez, at the Galería de la Biblioteca Pública Rubén Martínez Villena.

Carlos Guzmán is a graduate of the Escuela Elemental de Artes Plásticas Paulita Concepción and the Academia de Artes Plásticas "San Alejandro". Art Instructor, Director of Art Galleries and Professor of Drawing and Illustration at elementary, polytechnic, and university levels, Professor of Costume Design at ISDI and at ISA (for Scenic Design students).

Illustrator of books, magazines, postcards and other publications. He has participated in numerous projects of plastic design in important institutions for tourism purposes within the country, principally for the Iberostar and Barceló chains.

-Graduated in 1989 from the Academia de Artes Plásticas "San Alejandro".

-Professor of Drawing and Illustration, Costume Design and Set Design at the Instituto Superior de Arte in 2002, and from the Instituto Superior de Diseño Industrial from 1995-1998, La Habana, Cuba.

-Illustrator of several youth books and various children's books, including one of his own authorship, as well as publications and magazines.

-Winner of the National Illustration Prize "Raúl Martínez" in 2011.

-His work was chosen as the image for the XXXI Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano of La Habana, Cuba.

-He represented the Plastic Artists of Cuba and Latin America at the 4th Art Camp, Colors for the Planet, organized by UNESCO in 2014, Principality of Andorra.

-His work was selected to be exhibited at the United Nations, NY, 2016.

-Member of the Unión de escritores y Artistas de Cuba. (UNEAC)

He has held numerous personal and collective exhibitions from 1988 to the present, has participated in several Havana Biennials and in National and International Auctions, among other art-related events within and outside the country.

His works are found in private collections as well as in Galleries and Museums in Austria, Monaco, Germany, United Kingdom, South Africa, Russia, Portugal, Basque Country, Brazil, Mexico, Guadeloupe, Venezuela, Spain, United States, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Slovakia, Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, France and Holland.

Since he emerged on the Cuban visual arts scene in the late eighties, Carlos Guzmán has traveled diverse paths. His constant searching and restless spirit have led him to work as a draftsman, painter, sculptor, art instructor, gallery director, drawing professor and illustrator of publications.

Art Camp is an international forum where plastic artists from the five continents meet and interact sharing their culture and where they will present their own cultures through their artistic creations. Cuba will be represented for the first time in this upcoming edition with the renowned creator who has been given the label of postmedieval artist.
