Peña was a member of Cuba's national youth team. He graduated from ESPA Julio Trigo Junior College in Costa Rica. He also grew up in Havana, Cuba with his former teammate and current Toronto Blue Jays member shortstop, Yunel Escobar.
Peña was called to the Major Leagues early in the 2005 season due to an injury to Eddie Pérez. On May 23, 2008, Peña was designated for assignment.
On May 30, 2008, Peña was claimed by the Kansas City Royals. However, he was designated for assignment the next day, and did not appear in a game. He was promoted from the Royals' AAA affiliate on May 31, 2009. In 2010, Brayan earned a spot in the big league roster during spring training; he's spent the 2010 season at the MLB level backing up Jason Kendall. In 2010, Brayan earned a spot on the Major League roster during spring training, and has spent the 2010 season at the Major League level as a backup to Jason Kendall. Brayan Peña seeks to earn a spot as a starter for the future in the final month of the season, as Jason Kendall is out due to injury, Brayan has been receiving most of the playing time behind the plate in September.
After being acquired by the Kansas City Royals organization, Brayan Peña was sent to the Omaha Royals team, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pacific League. The Cuban made his debut as catcher and cleanup hitter on June 8 in the game between Omaha Royals and Iowa, a Chicago Cubs affiliate. His debut could not have gone better, going 4-2 with one run scored and one RBI.
To date, the catcher has participated in 12 of his team's 22 games and is averaging .306, with three doubles and four RBIs. In the majors this year, with Los Bravos de Atlanta, he only batted on 14 occasions in the same number of games.
The Cuban player is participating in the 2010 Caribbean Series with Leones del Escogido, of the Dominican Republic.
