Bienvenido Jiménez

Pata Jorobá

Died: December 23, 1951

Former baseball player. Batting leader in 1921 and 1922 with a .619 average, the highest from 1885 to 1995. Inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951.

Born in Cienfuegos. Brilliant defender of second base, as well as shortstop in the National Championships of Cuba in 1903 with the Habana Team. He stood out on offense for the timeliness of his hits, played in Cuban Professional Championships for 12 seasons with the Habana, Almendares, and Cienfuegos Teams.

In his statistics, he is recorded as having set a world record by stealing 8 bases in one game, specifically from the catchers of the Almendares club. The curious thing about the feat was that he stole second, third, and home twice.

For several seasons he played in the Negro Leagues of the United States with the Cuban Stars, in which he acted as player and manager. He also managed the Cienfuegos Club in the Cuban Professional Championships that participated in those tournaments of those years, obtaining the pennant in the 1929-1930 season.

Bienvenido has been in the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame since 1951, he is always remembered by the nickname "pata jorobá" (humpbacked leg) for his bowed legs, especially the left one, which made him walk with his characteristic sway.
