Bernardo Menéndez

Died: February 24, 2002

He was born in Havana. He began his artistic career in the mid-twentieth century, when there was a boom in television and radio on the Island.

He performed a range of characters that remained in popular memory, especially his role as Will Scarlett, in the Robin Hood series, alongside his colleague Enrique Almirante.

He worked in Mexican and American films shot in Cuba and by the early 60s he had an established name among Cuban actors.

He was founder of the space Aventuras, which since 1963 was broadcast on the small screen.

With a deep voice, which he knew how to modulate beautifully, Bernardo Menéndez could characterize both the comedian and the villain, supported by excellent acting skill and perfect command of his body.

He received several orders and distinctions to his credit, among them: the medals of Internationalist Worker, the Raúl Gómez García, and the Distinction for National Culture.

In recent times he was seen at the forefront of the popular masses demanding the liberation of his wife's son, Antonio Guerrero, a poet imprisoned in the United States, along with four other Cubans, on charges of espionage and conspiracy.

He died in Havana on February 24, 2002.
