Journalist Alfredo Viñas Alonso was a deserving recipient of several distinctions for his intense professional life. He passed away at the age of 78, ending an exemplary career that began when he graduated from the former Manuel Márquez Sterling School of Professional Journalism.
Founder, together with Luis Orlando Rodríguez, of the newspaper La Calle in 1955, he also distinguished himself for his work in other media outlets.
In January 1959 he joined the founding team of the Prensa Latina News Agency, and participated in the creation of Radio Habana Cuba, eventually becoming its general director. He also served as vice-dean of the former National Association of Journalists and, between 1966 and 1967, was sub-director of the newspaper Granma.
Founder of the Union of Journalists of Cuba, he received among other decorations the Medal of Combatant of the Clandestine Struggle, the Distinctions "Félix Elmuza" and "Raúl Gómez García" and the Commemorative Medals for the XXX and XL Anniversary of the FAR.
When he retired, he performed editorial work at the Ministry of Culture.
