Alfredo Valdés-Brito Ibáñez

Muerte: December 17, 1954

Outstanding Cuban musician from the first half of the twentieth century, first integrating various orchestras, later as composer and arranger.

Son of Cuban Alfredo Valdés Brito and Mexican Julia Ibañez, he is brother of musician and composer Julio Brito. From childhood under the teaching of Pedro Sanjuán, he learned to play several instruments such as: flute, saxophone, clarinet, and piano.

With maestro Armando Romeo Marrero he perfected everything related to music and direction of different orchestra models. He joined as flutist the orchestra of Antonio María Romeo Marrero.

Subsequently he joined Don Azpiazu's orchestra as saxophonist, with which he traveled to New York, where he arranged the musical arrangement of the street cry El manisero by Moisés Simons.

In 1930 he organizes the Siboney orchestra, performing on radio and making recordings, in which performed at different times, Carlos Alas del Casino, Rosario García, Esther Borja, Julio Brito, Nena Brito, René Cabel, María Ciérvide, Ramiro Gómez Kemp, Miguel García, Hermanos Hernández, Rafael Hernández, Toña la Negra and Pedro Vargas.

In the United States he directed Paul Whiteman's orchestra, performed musical work for films, such as Rumba, Yo soy el héroe and Prófugo.

As a composer he created symphonic music, among which are cited, Sonata for violin and piano and Fantasía. In popular music, he composed popular themes such as: Acelera, La choricera, El volumen de Carlota and the danzón, La flauta Mágica, this being one of the most recognized.

He transformed the theme El Manisero into a son-pregón, becoming an international standard when recorded for the RCA label by the New York orchestra of Cuban Don Azpiazu.
