He was born in Matanzas and died in Guanabacoa, in 1983.
At one year old his family moved to La Habana. At fifteen years old he began to sing. He was a member of the Septeto Habanero and other son groups. He directed a folkloric group that recorded albums, performed in theaters and appeared on radio programs.
He conducted a tour abroad leading the Grupo Folklórico Cubano. Author of the guaguancoes "Tinde aro", "Ya no tengo amigos", "Oye mi rumba", "A la rumba no le temas" and "Él vive bien".
He worked as an informant and exemplifier of folklore alongside Fernando Ortiz.
Zayas was leader of one of the first groups that recorded rumba, "Lulu Yonkorí," also known as the "Grupo Folklorico de Alberto Zayas." The group recorded "El Vive Bien" which was the first major rumba that was a "hit," which inspired the owner of Puchito to record Los Muñequitos, and to make a star of the singer Roberto Maza, who became known as "El Vive Bien."
