Adolfo de Aragón

Adolfo de Aragón. Professor Emeritus of the University of La Habana, Bachelor of Philosophy and Letters and Bachelor of Civil and Canon Law.

Born in La Habana. He completed Primary Education in La Habana. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the Institute of Secondary Education of La Habana in 1878. At the University of La Habana he obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Philosophy and Letters in 1882 and Bachelor of Civil and Canon Law in 1883.

That year he won the position of interim professor of Latin and Spanish at the Institute of Secondary Education of Pinar del Río. In 1894 he graduated as Doctor of Philosophy and Letters and obtained through competition the auxiliary chair of Greek and Latin Literature and Metaphysics at the University of La Habana.

In 1896 he was forced to leave the country for political reasons and moved to the United States. In the clubs "Primelles," "Patria" (New York) and "Tunas de Calixto" (Jacksonville) he carried out political activities.

In 1898 he was restored to the position of auxiliary professor. He held the chair of History of Classical Literature and, a few months later, through competitive examination, that of Latin Language and Literature (1900).

He was a member (1900-1916) and president (1914-1916) of the Board of Education of La Habana, dean of the Faculty of Letters and Sciences (1917-1919), rector and finally Professor Emeritus of the University.

He contributed to various publications of the time, including the Revista de la Facultad de Letras y Ciencias. He is the author of the lectures "Aristophanes and Ancient Greek Comedy" (1914) and "The Dramas of Aeschylus" (1916).

In 1922 he presides over the University Athletic Commission, created at the University of La Habana.

On October 15, 1923 he participates in the opening of the First National Congress of Students in the Aula Magna of the University of La Habana, convened by the FEU under the presidency of Julio Antonio Mella.
