Abelardo Buch López

Died: June 4, 1996

He was born in Santiago de Cuba. From a very young age he joined the faculty of the School of Medicine at the University of Havana at "Calixto García" Hospital, later at the "Joaquín Albarrán" Teaching Clinical Surgical Hospital as Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, and subsequently founded the Institute of Nephrology, of which he was director until his death.

His scientific work was very extensive, of extraordinary value for Medical Sciences in general and for Nephrology in particular. He fully identified with the Cuban Revolution's project and put his knowledge at the service of his people.

Starting in 1962, he began developing dialytic methods in Cuba, achieving recognition of the Nephrology specialty in 1966, earlier than many developed countries. That same year the Institute of Nephrology was also recognized.

From then on he held the position of Director of the center, head of the national group for the specialty, and president of the Cuban Society of Nephrology.

His scientific, teaching, research, and administrative work went beyond the national scope of the time. He was a founding member of the Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension and its honorary president until his death.

In 1987, a cerebrovascular condition separated him from active life.
He held the academic rank of Associate Professor, Doctor of Science, and Senior Researcher. He was distinguished among other decorations with the National Order "Carlos J. Finlay"
