Beijing Opens Its Doors to the Art of Flora Fong and Her Son Li Domínguez

June 23, 2019

It is not the first time that Flora Fong and her son Li Domínguez have visited China together, but «we had never before had the opportunity to present our works together here, and it makes me feel very proud», said Flora Fong, who will inaugurate at the Capital Bookstore in Beijing, on June 25th, the personal exhibition «Image, Calligraphy and Verse».

«This has been a long-awaited trip. Being here after several years has given me the opportunity to see how much China has grown, mainly from a cultural point of view. On this occasion, thanks to the Residency project, Li and I will also paint together and visit places of interest», she said.

The works by the author of «Whirlwinds and Cyclones» that will be exhibited in Beijing, «are accompanied by a poem and go back to an assessment of the dynastic periods of ancient China and the origin of calligraphies. There is no doubt, my roots have been the main source of inspiration for this series that is being presented for the first time in China».

Throughout her artistic life, Flora Fong has been interested in Asian culture, its millennia-old history, its landscape, preferred by Chinese artists and very present in traditional painting. «All of this has nourished my painting for decades. Although my work is very Caribbean, it does not lack the Asian component that I carry within me, thanks to my father. This is a trip to remember him and honor him».

Today is the right moment to bring our art closer to Beijing, acknowledged the Cuban artist. While some doors are closing for our Island, and they try to isolate us from the world, «we can say that we have the support and backing of this great nation, which I consider my second homeland», she concluded.
