In a brief statement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reported on the formal presentation of the Olympic Order to six prominent figures in international sports, including former basketball player Ruperto Herrera, current secretary general of the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC).
The brief note about what occurred in Lausanne, headquarters of the IOC, justified the awarding of the prize "in recognition of their excellent service to the world of sports throughout their careers."
Also deserving of the award on this occasion were deceased IOC members Patrick Baumann and Nat Indrapana, as well as former members of that organization Sam Ramsamy, Barry Maister, and Richard Peterkin.
Before departing for the headquarters of the 134th IOC Session, Herrera stated to JIT that he would receive the award as recognition for Cuba and its sports.
