Cuban dancer wins 2023 National Dance Award in United Kingdom

Cuban dancer Zeleidy Crespo won today the 2023 National Dance Award of the United Kingdom in the Outstanding Female Performance in Modern Dance category, for her participation in the show 100% Cubano.

The Acosta Danza company, directed by Carlos Acosta, presented this show in the European nation in the first months of 2022, where Crespo performs as a lead dancer.

For the current rating, the shows and performances between January 1 and December 31, 2022 were taken into account.

In 2021, Acosta Danza was nominated and won as the best independent company in the 21st edition of the National Dance Awards of that country, an event organized by the Dance Section of the Circle of Critics of the United Kingdom.

Born in the western province of Pinar del Río, Crespo began her dance studies in 2001 at the vocational school Raúl Sánchez García in her hometown.

Later, in 2003, she enrolled in the National School of Musical Performances, where she continued her dance studies, and graduated in 2006 as a Musical Performances dancer.

She began her professional career in the company directed by master Santiago Alfonso, an ensemble with which she participated in the theatrical works Jazz, Obba Yuru, Maria Antonia, among others.

She achieved First Level as a dancer, and performed on stages in Spain, France, Portugal and Russia.

She participated as a dancer in different events, such as the International Havana Cigar Festivals held every year in Havana, galas and presentations of musical productions in important competitions.

In 2014 she joined the Cuban Television Ballet, and made international tours accompanying musical groups in countries such as Switzerland and Germany.

She also participated in televised shows at the national level and in music videos of important figures in Cuban and Latin American music.

This award recognizes the work of Cuban artists for their constant participation in the British scene, a fact that strengthens Acosta Danza as one of the main ambassadors of Cuban culture in the international landscape.
