Weeks ago, Arlenis Sierra had expressed to this newspaper that when her Movistar club gave her the opportunity to fight to dominate a race, she would not let that opportunity pass.

The Cuban kept her word by conquering this Thursday the 2022 Vuelta a Andalucía, with a time of 8:41:56 hours, valid for being the leader in the individual general classification.

The stellar Cuban cyclist, who took over the position of team leader in the absence, due to injury, of the phenomenal Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten, proved the coaching staff right for adopting that decision, and dominated the event that lasted three days in that Spanish region. The Cuban won at the finish line in two of the three stages.

Sierra came second across the finish line in the third and final stage, completing the 138.9 km route between the towns of Fuengirola and Castellar de la Frontera, with a time of 2:19.58 hours. The winner was her club teammate, Serbian Jelena Eric, who achieved the same time as Sierra. German Ricarda Bauernfeind (CSG) took third place, according to the International Cycling Union website.

The victory in Andalucía constitutes the first prize that Arlenis has won since joining Movistar this season, one of the three strongest women's road cycling clubs in the world. It is expected that the Cuban will continue as leader in the club until the return of the multi-champion Dutch cyclist, who has an injury in one of her hands.
