With the 2024 road racing season underway, Noemi Rüegg achieved a remarkable victory on Saturday afternoon in Spain, specifically at the Trofeo Felanitx-Colònia de Sant Jordi.
The women's 1.1 race ended in a final sprint, in which Rüegg was able to withstand the strong push from Arlenis Sierra and Chiara Consoni. In this way, the 22-year-old Swiss rider from EF Education-Cannondale secured the first victory of her career.
The rider from Manzanillo finished second this Saturday at the Trofeo de Ruta Felanitx-Colonia de Sant Jordi, the start of the women's Mallorca challenge, which opens the elite season on the Old Continent.
Cuban Arlenis Sierra, who competes for the prestigious Movistar team, began the 2024 cycling season in Europe with an excellent result.
Arlenis only lost to Swiss rider Noemi Ruegg, from the Education-Cannondale team, in a massive uphill sprint.
The Cuban clocked three hours, three minutes and 35 seconds, the same time as the winner and 10 other cyclists over the 127.3 kilometers of the route.
Third place went to Chiara Consonni (Team ADQ), while her Movistar teammate, Spanish rider Laura Ruiz, also made it into the top ten of the competition.
At the start of the Mallorca route, 129 cyclists participated, although 14 did not finish the course.
On Sunday, in the second phase, the Movistar girls did not fare as well and stayed off the podium, and even suffered some crashes.
The competition continues this Monday.
The experienced cyclist has been the main figure of Cuban cycling for years and has an extensive palmares that places her at the forefront of road racing on the American continent.
Last year she won twice at the Central Americans in San Salvador and achieved a runner-up finish at the Pan Americans in Santiago de Chile.
Currently, while competing in the European professional circuit, she is preparing for the Paris Olympic Games, the main sporting event of the year.
