Arlen López trains in Mallorca ahead of May 1st professional boxing bout

Cuban two-time Olympic champion Arlen López Cardona is training in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, where he will fight on May 1 as part of a professional boxing card organized by promoter Agon Sports, the Cuban News Agency (ACN) reported on April 2.


The 33-year-old boxer from Guantánamo, who holds a perfect 6-0 professional record, is training under his longtime coach Víctor Sánchez Matos. His opponent in the light heavyweight division has not yet been officially announced, though the Cuban Boxing Federation is working with Agon Sports to finalize the matchup.


Also set to compete on the May 1 card in Mallorca are fellow Cuban boxers Saidel Horta, the 2023 World Championship runner-up in the featherweight division, and Alejandro Claro, a two-time world bronze medalist in the flyweight class. Cuban Boxing Federation president Alberto Puig de la Barca confirmed both bouts are scheduled for eight rounds. The Cuban Domadores team also has a card set for April 24 in Santiago de Chile, where Erislandy Álvarez, Lázaro Álvarez and Yusnier Sorsano will defend their WBA continental titles.

Cuban boxer. In his athletic career he holds a gold medal in the Olympics in the 75 kg category, and has also been a world amateur boxing champion in the same category. At the regional level he has also achieved gold medals in the Pan American Games and Central American and Caribbean Games.
