Wrestler Ángela Álvarez Martínez, Central American and Caribbean champion in San Salvador-2023, won the crown in the 57 kg category, while Yainelis Sanz took the bronze medal in the 55 kg category, at the International University Sports Festival in Ekaterimburgo-2023, in Russia.
Both athletes competed in three matches and performed very well physically and technically, in a competition dominated by Russian wrestlers from high-level universities with development programs in this sport, according to a report by the newspaper Jit.
This competition benefits both Ángela and Sanz greatly in their preparation for the Santiago-2023 Pan American Games. Today, Giannis Garzón and Yosenki Castañeda will take to the mat in freestyle.
SILVER FROM THE SPRINGBOARD
Anisley García and Carlos Daniel Ramos, finalist duo in world competitions, finished with an accumulated total of 277.05 points, placing them on the podium behind hosts Ekaterina Belyaeva and Roman Larin, representatives of the Vorónezh State Sports Academy, who scored 318.96 points.
The Caribbean delegation had previously won silver and bronze medals, with Anisley –individual platform– and Carlos Escalona –one-meter springboard–, respectively.
Prisis Leydi Ruiz and José Alfredo Quintana were also part of the group that used this competition as preparation for the Pan American Games.
The Cuban delegation, composed mainly of students from the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences, has also won medals in judo.
Additionally, the futsal team made the international debut for Cuban women in this discipline. Only our representatives in rhythmic gymnastics remain to compete: Gretel Mendoza and Keyla Miranda.
