Cuban actress Ana de Armas was nominated for the Golden Globe award in the Best Dramatic Actress category for her performance in the film Blonde, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association reported today.
On this occasion she competes with actresses of the caliber of Viola Davis (The Woman King), Olivia Colman (Empire of Light), Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) and Cate Blanchett (Tar), whose performances were also highlighted by critics this year.
Regarding the leading role of young De Armas in Blonde, American actor Brad Pitt told Entertainment Weekly magazine that the actress "is phenomenal". The also executive producer of the film recalled that the project had been in development for 10 years.
"It was impossible for us to reach the finish line until we found Ana," the artist assured about her interpretation of Marilyn Monroe.
For Cuban critic Joel del Río, the film's best trump card is its star: "Ana de Armas is immense in her ability to move from imitation to the visceral, from facial rictus to work with diction, and from there to the contortions of the spirit.
All of this with absolute fluidity and stunning ability," wrote the specialist in the newspaper Juventud Rebelde.
He noted that regardless of whether they nominate her, award her or not, "more than a star has been born, a great actress whose brilliance it took me time to perceive at first, but which I now recognize with all the frankness that comes with knowing you were wrong and even publishing the error".
"I save for last what is really the beginning, the best thing that, in my opinion, Blonde has: the performance of its star. It is a marvel to delight in her expressions, voice and movements so distant from the Latina that they are, so close to the Hollywood diva she portrays," noted journalist Susana Besteiro in the Cuban newspaper Granma.
De Armas managed to transform herself not only into the different characters portrayed by Marilyn, but also exceptionally assumed her existential challenges and personal conflicts, in addition to the personal problems she had to face during her existence, specialists commented.
Armas was also nominated in 2019 for the Golden Globes for her supporting role in "Knives Out," although she did not win.
The Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are given to film and television professionals worldwide. In recent years the awards have been tarnished by accusations of influence peddling and lack of diversity by not having any Black members in the composition of its members.
The awards ceremony will take place on January 10 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles. The list of nominees was announced this Monday by actresses Mayan Lopez, Helen Hoehne and Selenis Leyva.
