"When creating the art for the Twentieth Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, I wanted to create a form of escapism that sends a message of love, happiness and spirituality," declared the visual artist born in Manzanillo, Cuba.
The Latin Recording Academy announced this Wednesday, October 2, 2019, that Cuban painter Alberto Lago is the official artist of the Twentieth Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards.
Through a press release, the Latin Recording Academy reported that Alberto Lago's work will be prominently featured on posters, programs, books, tickets and other materials that reference the Latin GRAMMY, before and during the 20th edition of the Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, which will take place on November 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be broadcast live on the Univision network, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. Eastern/Pacific (7 p.m. Central).
"Alberto's art is full of radiant colors, symbols of happiness and messages of hope," said Gabriel Abaroa Jr., president/CEO of the Latin Recording Academy. "These elements converge creating a unique and vibrant piece that represents the music we will celebrate at the Twentieth Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards," he added.
As an acclaimed artist from Manzanillo, Cuba, Lago graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba. He works primarily using fluorescent pigments that transform under the effects of black light. Lago's works abound with symbols of happiness, such as butterflies, smiling faces and flowers.
"In a convulsive and chaotic world, we must focus on positivity and seeking light," said Lago. "Music offers people an escape. When creating the art for the Twentieth Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, I wanted to create a form of escapism that sends a message of love, happiness and spirituality."
Lago has held several exhibitions in Cuba. In 2011 he won the Internazionale di Pittura ISOLE Sardegna-Cuba Award and in the fall he will do an artistic residency at the Malévoz Cultural Quarter in Monthey, Switzerland, from where he plans to watch the Latin GRAMMY Awards broadcast in its 20th edition.
