Olympic two-time champion Alberto Juantorena Danger, president of the Cuban Athletics Federation, is reported in serious condition in the most recent medical report, issued at midday on this August 17th.

JIT reproduces the fundamental aspects of the information issued by Dr. Luis Enrique Martínez Rivero, specialist in intensive care and emergency medicine for adults at the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK), where Juantorena, 71 years old, remains hospitalized:

The patient is reported in serious condition.

On Tuesday, the ventilatory support was successfully removed and the patient is breathing spontaneously with supplemental oxygen.

There have been no complications from the respiratory standpoint.

The cardiovascular system is also stable and, from a neurological standpoint, he is alert, awake, cooperative, and feeding himself.

There have been no complications in the patient's progress.

Strict observation is being maintained and rehabilitative therapy is going to begin.
