April 12, 2026 marks the 159th anniversary of the birth of Sindo Garay, whose full name was Antonio Gumersindo Garay García. Born in Santiago de Cuba on April 12, 1867, Sindo Garay is considered one of the greatest troubadours and composers in the history of Cuban music, a towering figure of traditional trova from Santiago.
Without formal academic training, Garay possessed an extraordinary musical intuition that allowed him to create songs of unusual harmonic complexity for his era. His body of work includes pieces that have become jewels of Cuba's musical heritage, among them La tarde, Mujer bayamesa, Perla marina, and El huracán y la palma. He was one of the highest exponents of the style known as traditional Cuban trova, which integrates poetry, guitar, and song into a unique form of expression.
He reached an extraordinary old age, passing away on July 17, 1968, at 101 years old in Havana. His legacy lives on in every generation of Cuban musicians who have found in his work an inexhaustible source of inspiration. One hundred and fifty-nine years after his birth, Cuban music continues to honor him as one of its founding fathers.
