# Cuban jumper Maykel Massó wins gold at Ostrava athletic meet

**Date:** 06/02/2022

Cuban Olympic medalist Maykel Massó won the long jump at the Golden Shoes athletic meet with his best mark of the year (8.14 meters), a competition traditionally held in the Czech city of Ostrava.

The Santiago native had recently finished second at the Ibero-American Championship —where he jumped 10 centimeters less— and now showed better stability, according to coach Daniel Osorio in statements cited by the official site Jit.

According to Osorio, this time Massó only committed one fault and all his valid jumps exceeded eight meters, which is encouraging given his aspirations for the World Championships in Oregon, United States, to be held from July 15 to 24.

To secure a spot at that event, the Cuban still must surpass the minimum required by the organizers for his specialty, which is 8.22 meters.

"This time he was much more consistent and precise in the approach and takeoff; even the fouls were by a very small margin," commented the coach, who expressed confidence that the indomitable athlete will achieve his world championship ticket.

In Ostrava, the second and third places went to local runner Radek Juska (8.11 m) and French athlete Augustin Bey (8.00 m).

The aforementioned website also reported that Massó's next appearance will be this Sunday in the Diamond League in Rabat, where Greek Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou and Jamaican Tajay Gayle, the 2019 world champion, are expected to participate.
