# Roxana Gómez Breaks into Diamond League Podium with Bronze in 400m at Shanghai

**Date:** 05/17/2026

Cuban sprinter Roxana Gómez Calderón claimed the bronze medal in the 400 meters at the opening leg of the 2026 Diamond League, held on May 16 in Shanghai, China, clocking 50.24 seconds — her best mark of the season — in a high-caliber race dominated by Nickisha Pryce of Jamaica and Aaliyah Butler of the United States.

The Cienfuegos native could not match Jamaica's Nickisha Pryce, who took gold in 49.75 seconds, nor the American Aaliyah Butler, who completed the top two with 49.78. Nevertheless, Gómez withstood the pressure of the field and crossed third, sending a clear message about her form ahead of the season's major competitions — above all the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026, where Cuba aims to medal in athletics.

The result carries weight given the context: the Diamond League gathers the world's best athletes at each stop. The Shanghai 400m podium brought together three of the fastest women on the circuit in this early part of the season.

Having run 49.48 seconds in the final of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo — a new Cuban national record — Gómez enters 2026 as Cuba's fastest woman in the event's history alongside Ana Fidelia Quirós. The Shanghai bronze confirms that the record was no isolated peak, but the product of a sustained upward trajectory.

Gómez was recognized as the top athlete in Cienfuegos province in 2024 and remains the leading reference in Cuban women's athletics in the 400 meters.
