# Book Presentation: Yipsi Moreno, the Fury of Agramonte

**Date:** 02/16/2022

The book Yipsi Moreno, the Fury of Agramonte, was presented at the Fidel Castro Ruz Center in an event full of anecdotes, emotions and memories about the outstanding former Cuban athlete, Olympic and world champion in hammer throwing.

This is an emotional and thought-provoking text, interesting for people of any age, said historian, researcher and essayist Ernesto Limia at the presentation, first vice president of the Association of Writers of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).

Sports results, testimonies from those who accompanied her in her successful career and above all Yipsi's own perspective on so many years linked to high-performance sports, readers will find in the pages of that book written by young Lilian Cid and Andy Bermellón.

Published thanks to the Nuevo Milenio publishing house, that volume was an idea that began to take shape since 2013 with the purpose of reflecting the training, trajectory and results in official competitions of the current national athletics commissioner.

I consider it an instructive text, which seeks to reflect the woman and the human being behind the champion, said Cid very emotionally, who added that those pages serve to show the life stories of a simple and special person.

The authors also agreed in mentioning that for them the work has three fundamental values: the testimonial, the statistical and the graphic.

In Bermellón's case, he stated to the Cuban News Agency that the project started in 2013 and three years later they delivered it to the publishing house for its review process, until in November 2021 they informed him that it was ready for publication. He added that in the book one will meet the more human side of Yipsi Moreno, and furthermore, readers can find several unpublished photos; while regarding the competitive results they managed to compile all the official throws made by the former athlete during her sports career.

In that last aspect, he noted that they had the contribution of several outstanding statisticians, including Alfredo Sánchez, from the Cuban Athletics Federation, and Miguel Villaseñor, from the Royal Spanish Federation.

During the presentation Yipsi, member of the State Council of the Republic of Cuba and former star hammer thrower, with a record that includes three gold medals in world championships (Edmonton 2001, Paris 2003 and Helsinki 2005), and the Olympic crown in Beijing 2008, said she felt grateful to life for this text that tells her story as an athlete and as a person.

I feel pride because if my father were alive this would be a special gift for him; I give thanks to my country, to my people, to my family and friends for always being there for me, she said emotionally.

The opportunity was also used to present the former hammer thrower with the 60th Anniversary medal of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder), from the hands of Roberto León Richards, president of the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC).

Other attendees at the presentation of the book Yipsi Moreno, the Fury of Agramonte, were Ruperto Herrera, secretary of the COC, Yarelis Barrios, world and Olympic medalist in discus throwing, and other sports legends.
