Cuba had an excellent day this Saturday at the Wrestling World Championship in Belgrade, marked by the world crown achieved by Gabriel Rosillo (97 kg) and the advancement to the final of Olympic champion Luis Orta (67 kg).

At 24 years old, Rosillo defeated in the final the world-class Armenian Artur Aleksanyan, triple Olympic medalist and four-time world champion. In an extremely tight match, the Cuban managed to tie with only 21 seconds remaining, with a two-point action that opened the door to the podium, since it was he who scored the last points in a match that ultimately ended with a score of 3-3.

For the Cuban this represents his first medal in senior world tournaments, and places him in the spotlight ahead of next year's Olympic Games. Likewise, it represents an excellent performance for an athlete who had been away from competition due to several injuries and illnesses.

For his part, Olympic champion Luis Orta (67 kg) advanced to the final of his division and has already secured the third medal for Cuba and the fourth Olympic spot for Paris 2024.

Orta will dispute the title on Sunday against Azerbaijani Hasrat Jafarov, second in the world rankings, bronze medalist at the past world championship, world champion among under-23s and among juniors in 2021 and current European champion.

To reach the title bout, the Cuban had a path marked by victories by technical superiority of 8-0 against Tunisian Souleymen Nasr and Romanian Mihai Radu Mihut in his first two matches.

Later, he defeated 3-2 in the quarterfinals Serbian Mate Nemes, defending world champion and bronze medalist in the 2019 edition. Following this excellent result, the Caribbean wrestler faced the representative from Kyrgyzstan, Amantur Ismailov, third in the 2022 world competition, but also defeated him by superiority of 9-1.

On this day for Cuba, 87 kg Daniel Gregorich also competed on the mat, defeated 5-1 by Armenian Gevorg Tadevosyan.

With only the title dispute of Luis Orta in the 67 kg remaining, Cuba has already secured one gold medal, two silver and one bronze. Likewise, they added Olympic spots in the 67 kg, 97 kg and 130 kg divisions in the Greco-Roman style, while the women secured the quota in the 76 kg.
