# Náyare Menoyo Receives Rey de España International Journalism Award in the Television Category with a Documentary about Leonardo Padura

**Date:** 06/14/2021

The Cuban journalist Náyare Menoyo, winner of the International Journalism Award King of Spain in the Television category with the documentary Leonardo Padura, a meager and moving story, questioned that diplomatic representatives from the winning countries attended the award ceremony except from Cuba, where her recognition has been silenced by the press and institutions.

"Today at the ceremony there was 98% of the diplomatic representatives from the countries of the award winners. No one from Cuba came to show their support (…). All the praise I received was from foreigners. What can we expect?", wrote the young journalist on her social networks.

Menoyo, who officially works in the Cuban Television Information System, although she is on "leave", was disappointed because that media outlet did not mention obtaining the award.

"Sad that no state media called me for an interview. Only foreigners and independent outlets", lamented Menoyo, who stated that many friends write to her privately to congratulate her, "because doing so in public would bring them difficulties".

"I hope Cuba can change course. I hope we are not the ones who left, the ones who stayed. I hope that people, like me, don't have to leave to seek a better future and be willing to work eight hours standing in a bar, or laying tiles in construction", said the journalist, who is currently in Madrid.

Menoyo also recounted the difficulties she faced in making the documentary, as it was made with a camera lent by the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana (UH), "a cameraman from Canal Habana who agreed to do his work for free and an editor who did what normally would have been done by a team of five or six people".

The journalist lamented that, after completing the work, with which she graduated as a journalist from the UH, the material was not presented on Cuban Television.

Also awarded at the ceremony, held Wednesday night, was Cuban journalist and writer Carlos Manuel Álvarez, who received the Don Quixote Journalism Award, which is part of the International Journalism Awards King of Spain, for the article "Three Cuban Girls", published in the magazine El Estornudo on February 23, 2020.
