# Doctor Reynaldo Mañalich Dies, Important Figure of Cuban Nephrology

Cuban nephrology is in mourning this Saturday for the death at age 87 of Doctor in Medical Sciences Reynaldo Mañalich Comas, Specialist of Second Degree in Nephrology as a result of complications from COVID-19.

The also Full Professor and Consultant and researcher of merit was a member of the International, Latin American and Cuban Societies of Nephrology and of the Editorial Committee of the Latin American and Portuguese Nephrology Journals.

"Dr. Mañalich Comas treasured a rich scientific trajectory. He was the founder and initiator of the specialty of nephrology in Cuba, together with Dr. Abelardo Buch, and of kidney transplantation and nuclear nephrology in the country. He received the Annual Health Prize and the Prize from the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. He held the status of Pedagogue of the 20th Century, the Carlos J. Finlay Order and the Distinction for 50 years of Public Health, among others," recognizes the government.

His colleague, Doctor in Medical Sciences and nephrologist Jorge Pérez Oliva, lamented the news and stated:

"What can be said in the face of the irreversible fact of the death of Professor Reynaldo Mañalich? Founder, teacher, man of his time and example for all times among us. He was the Cuban nephrologist with the greatest scientific impact in the explanation of renal damage caused by low birth weight in humans, published in Kidney International and recognized by Brenner in his text. It demonstrates that he is, by far, through his articles expression of his work, the most cited of the national nephrologists.

His merits are summarized in being, also, the only one of our Specialty decorated in 2018 as Annual Health Prize, for Scientific Merit "For the Work of a Lifetime", National Hero of Labor of Cuba. Professor, of you only it can be said with our Martí that «Death is not true when the work of life has been well accomplished; the thinking skull turns to dust; but the thoughts that were elaborated in it live perpetually and bear fruit» Professor and FRIEND, RIP".
