# Cuban Mountaineer Yandy Núñez Will Attempt to Reach the Summit of Everest in the Early Morning

**Date:** 04/21/2023

Cuban mountaineer Yandy Núñez announced on his Facebook profile that he will attempt to reach the summit of Everest in the early morning of April 21, after leaving Base Camp heading to the high camp of Lobuche Peak.

Núñez arrived at Base Camp on April 19 and posted several photos of the tents and other colleagues who, like him, aspire to reach the summit of the highest mountain on the planet. He also showed his mountaineering equipment and his tent.

"Heading to the high camp of Lobuche Peak. We'll attempt the summit this early morning," the young man wrote on the social network.

This would be the second time that Núñez reaches Lobuche Peak, since in 2021 the young man from Havana became the first native of the island to reach that summit, located at an altitude of 6,119 meters.

"Good luck, congratulations and go forward, may you reach and raise Cuba's name high at 8,848 meters above sea level, we're with you," "Your dream will come true" and "Go forward with the strength and courage you have," were some of the reactions to Núñez's announcement that he was close to achieving his goal.

In the midst of the journey, ADN Cuba contacted the climber to learn firsthand his impressions, but so far no response has been obtained. The climber had previously commented that "for a few days he would not have Internet."

Two years ago, the Cuban mountaineer was unable to achieve his dream after contracting COVID-19 when he was already at Camp 2 of Everest, at 6,480 meters of altitude.

Núñez has resided in Iceland since 2015 and traveled to Nepal from Helsinki International Airport.

"Leaving Iceland on my way to conquer the Everest of my dreams. Trying to become the first Cuban-Icelander to reach the summit of Everest. Never give up on your dreams," the athlete commented before embarking on the adventure once again.

During his career as a mountaineer, the young man has already climbed Pico de Orizaba, the highest peak in Mexico; Aconcagua, the highest mountain in America, and was the first Cuban to reach the summit of Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe.

Núñez was born in the town of Calabazar, in the municipality of Boyeros, in Havana, and before emigrating he worked in Cuba as a luxury car driver.
