# Iván Fernández selected for the Council of the Panamerican Taekwondo Union

The executive, former athlete and Cuban Seventh Dan Iván Fernández Quirós was elected member of the Executive Council of the Pan American Taekwondo Union (PATU), where he will represent the Caribbean for the 2021-2025 period.

"My main objective is to defend the interests of our geographic area to develop the sport," Fernández Quirós expressed to JIT, the institutional publication of sports in the largest of the Antilles.

Along with the Cuban, the council is made up of American Choung Pham for North America and Brazilian Alberto Cavalcante Maciel Junior for South America.

Mexican Juan Manuel López Delgado was elected as the top leader of PATU, who defeated by a wide margin Korean-American Inseon Kim.

According to the specialized website MasTaekwondo, López turned the Mexican Taekwondo Federation into the best in the world.

On Monday, October 10, elections were held for the World Taekwondo Federation, a martial art that emerged on the Korean peninsula and an athletic discipline in which Cuba treasures medals at all levels, such as the Olympic gold of Holguín native Ángel Valodia Matos (84 kg) in Sydney 2000, the Olympic silver of Manzanillo native Yanelis Labrada (57 kg) in Athens 2004 and the world titles of Glenhis Hernández (73 kg) and Rafael Alba (80 kg) in Puebla 2013.
