# Flavio Garciandía opens his first Mexico retrospective at MARCO in Monterrey

Monterrey’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO) opened Flavio Garciandía: Unauthorized Self-Portrait on September 25, 2026, the first retrospective in Mexico devoted to the Cuban painter and conceptual artist born in Caibarién in 1954, according to Proceso, El Universal and the museum.

Curated by Tobias Ostrander, Estrellita B. Brodsky Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art at Tate Modern in London, the exhibition brings together about 90 works made from the mid-1970s to 2020 across galleries 1–4 on the museum’s ground floor. The selection ranges from early paintings to Caribbean kitsch-linked installations and ironic dialogues with Western modernism.

Garciandía, a figure associated with the Volumen Uno generation (1981), lived in Monterrey from the mid-1990s to 2005 and left a mark on the local art scene before settling in Mexico City. The exhibition remains on view through April 18, 2027.
