# Paquita Armas Fonseca, Outstanding Cuban Journalist, Passed Away

Cuban journalist and writer Paquita Armas Fonseca passed away on February 27, 2023 in Havana. Paquita died as a result of a stroke.

She was born in 1950 in the eastern province of Holguín, and graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Oriente in 1977.

Throughout her career she specialized in cultural journalism, fundamentally in film, radio, and television.

She was a member of the executive board of the film, radio, and television association of the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC), since 1994.

She served as editor-in-chief of the magazine Somos Jóvenes and of El Caimán Barbudo, the latter which she directed from 1984 to 1988.

Her texts on Marxism appeared in El Caimán Barbudo, La Jiribilla, Juventud Rebelde, Bohemia, and in publications from other countries such as Spain, Mexico, and Ecuador.

In recent times she published her work on the website La Jiribilla, Cubadebate, and the Cuban television portal.

Among the recognitions she received were the Distinction for National Culture, the Caracol Awards and the July 26 Award, which are granted by the Union of Cuban Journalists.
