# Diego García Makes History for Sancti Spíritus With Bronze at the International Mathematical Olympiad

Cuban student Diego García Rodríguez, of the Eusebio Olivera Preuniversity Vocational Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE) in Sancti Spíritus, won a bronze medal at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held in Shanghai, China, becoming the first young competitor from his province ever to take part in the world competition.


"This is the first time someone from Sancti Spíritus has joined the IMO, so Diego made history," said Daniel Alejandro Espinosa Aguiar, coordinator of the Provincial Center for Talented Students (CPDT) in Sancti Spíritus, of the teenager's performance at the event.


García Rodríguez arrived in Shanghai having already won a gold medal at the Central American Mathematical Olympiad, a result that helped secure his spot on Cuba's national team. He prepared for the competition under coaches Carlos Sebrango and Catalina Rodríguez Felipe.


Cuba won three bronze medals overall at this year's IMO, a competition that brings together the world's top pre-university math students each year. García Rodríguez's result adds to a strong season for Cuban students in international science olympiads in 2026.
