# Cuban Writer Álex Padrón, a Leading Voice in Cuban Noir Fiction, Dies in Havana at 52

Cuban writer Juan Alexander Padrón García, known in literary circles as Álex Padrón, died Thursday, July 17, 2026, in Havana at age 52. The news was confirmed by Cuban cultural outlets and by people close to the author on social media.


Born in Havana in 1973, Padrón held a degree in pharmaceutical sciences and spent his early professional years in scientific research and teaching before turning fully to writing, his true calling. He worked as an editor at the Juan Marinello Cuban Institute for Cultural Research and served as an editorial advisor for the Spanish publishing house Atmósfera Literaria.


His work spanned science fiction, noir fiction and poetry, genres in which he became a recognized voice both on and off the island. Among his best-known titles are "Reino Eterno," "La balada de Xander Sirius," "Matadero" and "La herencia de los patriarcas," along with the reference work "Catauro de seres míticos y legendarios en Cuba," co-written with Manuel Rivero Glean and Gerardo Chávez.


Over his career he received honors including the Grand Prize of the Ibero-American Terra Ignota Competition in 2004 for his story "Reversión" and the 2025 La Edad de Oro Prize, in the science fiction, fantasy and crime fiction category, for his work "Berceuse." Colleagues and readers remembered him as one of the most singular voices in recent Cuban fiction and an essential reference point for the island's new noir literature.
