# Marcel Hernández Campanioni

Marcel is a Cuban international footballer. He plays on the field as an offensive midfielder and forward, his current team is Club Sport Cartaginés of the First Division of Costa Rica and has scored a total of 48 goals in Costa Rica.

He has also been an international with the Cuba national football team on twenty-four occasions, achieving eight goals.

After leaving Cuba and before arriving in Costa Rica, Marcel Hernández played football in Antigua and Barbuda and the Dominican Republic. He was not called up again by the national team.

He left Cuba in 2015 and joined Greenbay Hoppers of the First Division of Antigua and Barbuda. In the following years he played for Moca FC, El Barcelona Atlético and Cibao, teams from the Dominican Republic, before joining Costa Rican Cartaginés.

A Costa Rican media outlet reported that the capital city forward could return to his home country's team to play matches against Granada and the Honduran nation, qualifiers for the Concacaf Nations League.

He participated with the national team in the 2011 Concacaf Gold Cup as a starter in the three matches of the first phase, which ended in heavy defeats preventing him from advancing further.

His most memorable performance came in the 2012 Caribbean Cup, when he was the best player on the team that won the first title for the largest of the Antilles in these tournaments. In that tournament he scored 5 goals, one of them in the final, to decide the match in extra time against Trinidad and Tobago.

On December 16, 2012 a goal of his in the eighth minute of the second half of extra time meant a 1-0 victory for the Cubans against Trinidad and Tobago in the final of the Caribbean Cup, a competition in which Marcel had also scored four goals in a single match against Suriname.

Cuba thus conquered this tournament for the first time, making history.

In 2020 Marcel consolidated himself as the second top scorer not only of the Costa Rican tournament, but also of the world so far this year. For his results in football, Hernández is carrying out the necessary procedures to be able to become a Costa Rican citizen, and thus be able to represent the tico nation in the national team.
