Physician who achieved fame and fortune, was a great patriot and an excellent philanthropist.

He was born in Cimarrones, present-day Carlos Rojas (Jovellanos), son of José de Zayas and Carlota Jiménez.

He began his initial studies at the Colegio de San Cristóbal de Carraguao in Havana. In 1840 he entered the Faculty of Philosophy of the Real y Pontificia Universidad de San Gerónimo de La Habana and received his Bachelor of Sciences degree on September 14, 1844, later receiving the degree of Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery on September 13, 1851 and the degree of Licentiate in Medicine and Surgery on March 9, 1853.

He belonged as a professor to the faculty of Colegio El Salvador in the period from 1848 to 1861, in 1861 precisely he was elected on March 3, founding member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Médicas, Físicas y Naturales de La Habana, moving to the category of Honorary Member on June 14, 1868.

He was part of the Section of Medicine and Surgery and of the Commission of Anatomical and Physiological Work and Studies and of Pathology, Pathological Anatomy, Therapeutics and Pharmacology.

He donated numerous scientific works when the library of the Real Academia de Ciencias Médicas, Físicas y Naturales de La Habana was created.

From 1869 to 1874 he granted an annual prize of 50 gold pesos which he increased to 100 gold pesos thereafter, it was granted fundamentally to works in Pediatrics and the Real Academia named it Premio Zayas.
