Alexeis Argilagos, a Cuban volleyball player who was part of the national team's celebrated "golden generation" of the late 1990s, died on August 1, 2026, in Italy at age 51 after battling a brain tumor.

Born in 1975 in Camagüey, Argilagos rose through Cuba's national volleyball program and helped the men's team win the World League title in 1998, along with a bronze medal at that year's World Championship and a silver medal at the 1999 World League. He also won gold with Cuba's squad at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, playing alongside teammates such as Osvaldo Hernández, Ihosvany Hernández, Alain Roca, Pavel Pimienta and Raúl Diago.

Known for his versatility as an attacking receiver despite standing nearly two meters tall, Argilagos was among Cuba's pioneering liberos. After the Sydney 2000 Olympics, he left the island to continue his career abroad, first in Qatar and later in Italy, where he spent more than two decades playing for clubs including Isernia, Mantova, Castellana Grotte and Sora before retiring after the 2022-23 season. He went on to coach the women's club 4Volley Tempocasa Rivalta.

Argilagos is survived by his son, Bryan Argilagos, who followed him into professional volleyball as a setter. Tributes poured in from Italian volleyball clubs and federations following news of his death.
