# Athletics: Cuban Leyanis Pérez wins world bronze in Budapest

**Date:** 08/25/2023

Cuban Leyanis Pérez won the bronze medal today in the triple jump final, corresponding to the XIX World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, through next Sunday.

Pérez, who finished fourth at the Eugene 2022 world championships, was able to reach the podium this time and confirm her place among the elite of this event on the planet, with a mark of 14.96 meters (m) in her first attempt, just two centimeters short of her personal best.

In a competition of great qualitative level, the young Cuban athlete was in second place until the sixth and final round, but was dropped to third place by Venezuelan star Yulimar Rojas, Olympic champion, world champion and world record holder.

After five attempts, Rojas was in an unexpected eighth place, but showed her exceptional triple jump pedigree by jumping 15.08 m, which allowed her to win the gold medal, a result expected by everyone.

Ukrainian Maryna Beck-Romanchuk (15.00 m) took the silver medal in that event; while another athlete from the Island, Liadagmis Povea (14.87 m), finished in sixth place, according to the official World Athletics website.

Povea, fifth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with her performance again demonstrated that she is among the best in triple jump, although she still needs a bit more to reach the desired podium.

The Venezuelan and the two Cubans were the three medalists last July at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, in a competition of great quality that had a second chapter on Hungarian soil.

There at that regional event Rojas won gold with 15.16 m, followed by Pérez, who stretched to 14.98 m to secure the silver medal; while Povea (14.85 m) finished with bronze.

So far, the Caribbean nation's delegation has won one silver medal and two bronze medals at this universal championship, a harvest that was started by triple jumpers Lázaro Martínez and Cristian Nápoles, second and third, respectively.
