Cuban actor Teherán Aguilar is participating in the difficult rescue efforts among the rubble following the devastating explosion at the Saratoga Hotel on Friday, in Havana.

Island television viewers remember Aguilar for his leading role in the telenovela "Historias de Fuego", where he played a firefighter command officer in Havana. His connection to that world captivated him, leading him to later take a course as a rescue and salvage technician.

Now the actor is part of the group that explores the remains of the building day and night hoping to find, preferably, survivors.

"At 10:30 pm this Cuban continues to write and star in a different, complex script, whose performance requires much more commitment and sacrifice. The dedication that, like the others who are here, makes him an everyday hero, a necessary one, one of drive", wrote journalist Dairon Caballero, from Radio Habana Cuba.

The same communicator explains that Aguilar decided to take a course as a technician after his role in the telenovela. Images of the actor in the affected area have been shared on social media, highlighting his bravery.

"Actor Teherán Aguilar today lives an impactful scene. From his performance in the Cuban novel Historias de fuego to a real and sad story that moves everyone. Here his role is vital, it defines a chapter of great intensity for those who see him and his companions searching for heartbeats, dreams with life" he wrote.

"Today it's not about fiction, and there he is, where actor Teherán Aguilar is most useful. Thank you", wrote internet user Heydy Montes de Oca on Facebook.

"It's not a frame from a telenovela or series. It's our beloved actor Teherán Aguilar in the rescue and salvage efforts at the Saratoga Hotel disaster, a real-life hero. Our admiration, pride and respect", expressed the user Cubaactores Actores Cubanos on Facebook.

"A great man, Teherán and not just for his stature but for the size of his soul. Thank you", said renowned Cuban actor Héctor Noas. In addition to his role in "Historias de fuego", Aguilar participated in the Cuban telenovelas "Vidas Cruzadas" and "El rostro de los días", and in 2005 he starred in the film "Bailando Cha Cha Chá".

Also at the site is Reinaldo Suárez López, a rescue technician who lost a leg in an accident while on a mission. In 1992, Suárez went with his colleagues to put out a fire in a munitions warehouse of a military unit in the municipality of Guanabacoa. A fragment of an exploding projectile destroyed his right leg.

The technicians have the support of a canine brigade to find people. Nearly twenty buildings suffered damage from the strong explosion, among them, the Capitol, the Martí Theater, the headquarters of the Yoruba Association, the Buddhist temple El Calvario, and an elementary school near the hotel.
